Using Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation Therapy to Treat Behavioral Health Symptoms in a Combat Operational Setting.

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Addressing combat operational stress reactions (COSR) in the deployed setting can be a challenging endeavor. During the Global War on Terror, the modalities of psychotherapy and general medicine are not always feasible to manage COSR. Available behavioral health resources and practitioners remain taxed despite the most robust behavioral health billeting in recent history. Studies have suggested that COSR symptoms including sleep problems, anxiety, and depression are common presenting issues in the operational setting. Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is a treatment modality that passes low-frequency microcurrent into neuronal tissue. A growing body of research suggests that CES offers relief from symptoms associated with COSR in similar populations. A recent survey revealed that 50 to 66% of respondents using CES reported symptom improvement, with less than 1% reporting side effects. CES provided our behavioral health team with an innovative and efficient tool in improving functioning in our warfighters affected by COSR.

An Introduction to Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation
Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is the application of low-level, pulsed electrical currents (usually not exceeding one milliampere), applied to the head for medical and/or psychological purposes. It is primarily used to treat both state (situational) and trait (chronic) anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress related and drug addiction disorders, but it is also proving indispensable for ...
متن کاملA pilot study of cranial electrotherapy stimulation for generalized anxiety disorder.
BACKGROUND Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is a noninvasive procedure that has been used for decades in the United States to treat anxiety, depression, and insomnia in the general population. Whether CES is an effective treatment for patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has not previously been explored. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effica...

متن کاملCranial electrotherapy stimulation for the treatment of chronically symptomatic bipolar patients.
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine if cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is beneficial in chronically symptomatic bipolar (CSBP) subjects. METHODS A retrospective chart review of all consecutive CSBP subjects who were prescribed CES collected demographic and clinical information. RESULTS The Clinical Global Impression improved significantly [mean (SD), 2.7 (0.6) at basel...
متن کاملUsing cranial electrotherapy stimulation to treat pain associated with spinal cord injury.
Treatments for chronic pain in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) have been less than effective. Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES), a noninvasive technique that delivers a microcurrent to the brain via ear clip electrodes, has been shown to effectively treat several neurological and psychiatric disorders. The present study examined the effects of daily 1-hour active CES or sham CES tr...
